Ham Casserole: Delicious And Easy To Prepare
After a long hard day at the office or taking care of the kids, it's hard to find the energy to even think about making a well balanced dinner for you and your family. When you're hungry and tired, the four most common words to come to mind during dinner time for most families would have to be without a doubt “let's order a pizza!” Pizza is the American families fail safe meal, everyone loves pizza – especially kids- but it's not exactly the healthiest, or cheapest, meal choice for your family.
We all want to give our family the best, but who wants to spend hours and hours in the kitchen, when it's much for fun to be spending time with our families? There are many different quick and simple recipes to make, but by far the one that most families – especially those with younger kids- will agree is the best is ham casserole. Ham casserole dish is a great, all inclusive meal, it includes all the food groups, plus is extremely inexpensive and not very time consuming; you just put it into the over and in about the same time it takes for a pizza to arrive it's done.
This ham breakfast casserole recipe is especially great if you are a fan of Hawaiian pizza or pineapple. Feel free to leave out the nuts if you prefer.
What you will need:
- 1 (8-1/2 ounces) can of pineapple chunks, drained
- 1 (10-1/2 ounces) can of sweet potatoes, drained
- 2 cups cooked ham
- salt and pepper, add to taste
- 3 tablespoons of dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 can of onion soup (condensed)
- 1/2 cup of pecans or walnuts, chopped
Instructions:
Note: can size is approximate and does not have to be exact. If you want to use fresh, then 4 large sweet potatoes boiled, peeled and sliced thickly may be substituted.
1. Cut ham into Cut the ham into 1/2 inch cubes. Heat butter in a heavy casserole or ovenproof skillet and brown the ham lightly.
2. Add the pineapple chunks, onion soup and 1 tbsp of brown sugar. Season with the salt and pepper to taste. Bring to boil, then remove from heat.
3. Place the sweet potatoes in an even layer over the ham and pineapple mixture, making sure the slices overlap to make an even cover.
4. Combine the pecans and remaining brown sugar. Spread this evenly over the sweet potatoes.
5. Bake for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 400°F (204°C). Let cool 10 minutes before serving.
This ham casserole recipe serves 4 people, if you need to make more servings just double the ingredients accordingly. Ham casserole is great to use as leftovers also. If you want to make this a ham breakfast casserole you could add eggs or hash browns and sausage, whatever you want. That's the beauty of casserole; it's versatile, healthy, and inexpensive.
